sustainable urban landscape consultancy

Sustainable urban landscapes are the forte of Mark Laurence, an award-winning international designer, based in the UK. Mark consults on the design of vertical green walling, urban design, rain gardens and the biofiltration of ponds and greywater, forest gardens and edible landscapes; all underpinned with the subtle use of design psychology.

public landscape plan

So much is needed from our urban public spaces - far more than we often realise. As a global society, we are now more than 50% urbanised, rising to 80% by 2050. Simple things - peace, relaxation, beauty - will be hard to find; we will also have to develop urban space in a way which aids us in a future of resource scarcity.

As society has to tackle looming issues of global warming, material shortage and energy decline, we have to seriously re-evaluate the ways in which we live and create our environments. Landscape is the arena in which we play out our lives, so it is imperative that we widen our thinking and experience to embrace this fully.

natural drift planting

There are new frontiers, new requirements, new (and traditional) solutions to be found. Low energy, carbon neutral materials, recycled and reclaimed options, forest gardens and landscapes that are edible, water features that filter and reuse gray water, micro-generation of energy and materials; these are all elements that we must design with for a sustainable and beautiful future.
